I SKI NY, www.iskiny.com announced back in November, that over $70 million in investments and enhancements for the 2018-2019 season had been made. More then 25 resorts and mountains had committed to the venture with enhancements in snowmaking, chair lift operations, lodging and guest services, plus more. The invested capital is far more than any other Northeastern state, and places New York as the largest investor for the 2018-2019 season.

We are excited to announce that lot 07 remains the last available lot at Hudson Woods. This is the first Hudson Woods house constructed and it was held by us for the duration of the project. The house is furnished and appointed by our team and includes augmentations above and beyond many of the other Hudson Woods houses, including substantial landscaping work that has matured, a custom planter and firepit installation, a custom laundry room and other built-in shelving around the house, shades on select windows, etc.

The window dressing selection has a strong influence on the mood and atmosphere of the space. For the model house we used battery powered roller shades from our friends at JGeiger Shading Technology.

We are excited to announce that Lang Architecture, the firm behind Hudson Woods is designing and developing a new project at Windham Mountain. The site is situated on 76.5 acres which was originally part of a copper mine. Today the site is prepared for construction of 9 single family homes and 25 town homes. The project is located at the base of Windham Mountain, minutes away from the ski area and resort and across the road from the Windham golf club.

Field & Supply is back again for its fourth year. This time the design fair will take place at Hutton Brickyards, a newly opened event venue on the Hudson River waterfront only 2 miles from Kingston, NY and 26 miles from Hudson Woods (along a scenic drive winding along the Ashokan Reservoir). The Hutton brickyard was once a major driver of the Kingston's economy, employing hundreds of workers to quarry clay, make and bake bricks, and load them onto barges headed downstate. For more than a century, they were the raw material for New York City’s building boom.

Olana State Historic Site is a mid-19th century architectural gem tucked away 10 minutes south of Hudson, a great destination when visiting the town. The estate was built for and designed by esteemed Hudson River School painter Frederic Church who's vision for the home was influenced by traveling with his wife, Isabel through Europe and the Middle East. The blend between Victorian architecture and Middle Eastern heritage is evident through design elements such as arched window openings, balcony woodwork and tile work.

Our friends at Workstead released a new collection at ICFF called The Lodge Collection. We partnered with Workstead in the early design stages of Hudson Woods to outfit the model house with lighting. The model house utilizes 2 of their pieces: the industrial chandelier at entry hall and bent wall lamp in the garage/studio. Workstead is based out of New York City, though they have roots in the Hudson Valley and have worked on several projects in the area. Workstead's new collection utilizes a series of structural wooden frames to support a variety of straightforward lighting functions: chandelier, pendant, sconce. The play between wood and metal emphasizes the counterpoint between structure and network.

Our friends at Escape Brooklyn have discovered a wonderful fly fishing package hosted by Esopus Creel. They organize all inclusive getaways centered around fly fishing in the Catskills Mountains featuring private chefs, photographers, live music and everything local. It is said that fly fishing originated in the Catskills in the 1800's and quickly became one of the most adored pastimes for New Yorkers. Architects have an interesting fascination with chairs. Many of the renowned 20th century architects are known as much for their chairs as they are their architecture, from Le Corbusier to Mies Van Der Rohe. Furniture design is much allows architects to craft on a smaller scale. The finished product in furniture design is much easier to test and much quicker to accomplish. Whereas buildings take years and maybe decades, a chair can be released relatively quickly.

One of our favorite places in the Catskills, Windham is in the heart of the Catskills. One of the most beloved mountains in the area, it has the perfect trails for any skill level. The mountain ranges from 12 novice trails to seven steep double-black runs but nearly half of the trails are rated intermediate.

Born in Hungary, András Gipp spent his childhood watching his father and grandfather sculpt with stone, and craft everything from beds to bowls with their hands. He fell in love with wood in the Bakony forest, the former hunting grounds of Hungarian kings, where he ran wild as a child, creating stories among the trees and marveling at the warmth of this living medium. András later studied fine art woodworking and instrument making in Hungary and Vienna before venturing to New York City, with little more than a suitcase and his guitar.

Growing up in his father’s wood shop and sculpture studio, Aaron was surrounded by art and architecture from birth. Aaron worked as an apprentice to builders as well as ceramicists throughout high school. In college, he studied both ceramics and architecture, graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture from the California College of the Arts in 2008. Aaron worked professionally as an architect in New York City, for three years before starting his own studio. Aaron’s work finds a balance between functionalism, simplicity and innovation. Aaron pushes material and maker boundaries to continually create and find new methods of using familiar materials in new and exciting ways.

Fall is in full swing upstate, a beautiful time of year in the Hudson Valley and a perfect setting for the 3rd iteration of Field + Supply. The maker fair has expanded again and moved to the venerable and recently renovated Hasbrouck House. Many of our local friends will be represented including Materia Designs, Sawkille, Fern, Workstead, Michael Robbins, AndNorth and Kingston Wine Co. Workshops and events will also be held this year including; leather working, indigo dying, Autumn table arrangements and arrow making for kids and adults. Many people have asked about renting a home at Hudson Woods. While at the moment there are no properties available for rent, we anticipate that in time, many Hudson Woods homes will be rented, including the model house. To test how this might work, we posted the model house on Airbnb. We quickly received a flood of booking inquiries, and compiled statistics reflecting this activity over a one week period.

If you are planning a post memorial day weekend escape this Summer, the historic Catskill Mountain House site, is a great destination. Located near the North-South Lake campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve it is less than 40 miles north of Hudson Woods, just past the scenic Ashokan Reservoir. The escarpment on which the lakes are located is at 2,250 feet above the valley floor, providing a view of five states in clear weather. Located a short hike from the North-South campground is the site of the Catskills Mountain House, a former hotel opened in 1842.

This Fall, our friends at Workstead, finished their fist full hotel project now open in the Hudson Valley. Workstead is a design studio, founded in 2009 by Stefanie Brechbuehler and Robert Highsmith, located in Brooklyn New York and the Hudson Valley, where they focus on architectural and interior design, lighting, furniture, and exhibitions. We have looked at the Workstead in a past post but recently they completed a charming 27-room hotel in Hudson, NY called the Rivertown Lodge.

With beautiful fall months approaching in the Catskills, construction at Hudson Woods continues to progress. Thirteen lots have been sold and a contract is out for Lot 1, there are only 6 lots left in "phase three" of the project. We anticipate that five of the homes sold will be move-in ready this fall including lots 11, 14, 16, 19 and 22. Additional lots are in various stages of construction and are slated to be completed any time between winter and spring of early 2016.

As construction at Hudson Woods progresses, with foundations being poured at lots 14 & 19, we would like to convey some compelling facts about our site work. Our land use strategy includes utilizing raw materials from the property to create finished products. Gravel used to construct roads and driveways at Hudson Woods is being made from stone on the property. The stone is mined as a byproduct of excavation work already taking place for our house foundations and storm water retention ponds.

Last week we looked at detail elements of Hudson Woods homes with windows and doors provided by Premier Custom Millwork. This week we’re focusing on another detail - the door hardware used throughout Hudson Woods homes. Every door handle is made of sand cast solid bronze using traditional artisan techniques. All hardware is made to order and assembled by hand in the foundry and studio at Sun Valley Bronze, a family owned and operated business of over 21 years.
