When looking for shading options to finish the interior furnishing at the Hudson Woods model house, it was important to strike the right balance between warmth, simple elegance and functionality. The window dressing selection has a strong influence on the mood and atmosphere of the space. For the model house we used battery powered roller shades from our friends at JGeiger Shading Technology.

We are excited to announce that Lang Architecture, the firm behind Hudson Woods is designing and developing a new project at Windham Mountain. The site is situated on 76.5 acres which was originally part of a copper mine. Today the site is prepared for construction of 9 single family homes and 25 town homes. The project is located at the base of Windham Mountain, minutes away from the ski area and resort and across the road from the Windham golf club.

This year Field & Supply was held at the expanded Hutton Brickyards location. Field & Supply is back again for its fourth year. This time the design fair will take place at Hutton Brickyards, a newly opened event venue on the Hudson River waterfront only 2 miles from Kingston, NY and 26 miles from Hudson Woods (along a scenic drive winding along the Ashokan Reservoir). The Hutton brickyard was once a major driver of the Kingston's economy, employing hundreds of workers to quarry clay, make and bake bricks, and load them onto barges headed downstate. For more than a century, they were the raw material for New York City’s building boom.

We will be holding an open house Next Sunday, June 25th from 12-2 PM hosted by Architect, Drew Lang. We hope you can stop by and also catch the opening of Michael Robbins' furniture showroom. Michael Robbins is a designer and furniture maker located in Germantown, NY, between Tivoli and Hudson. We worked with Michael to help outfit the model house and then again to organize an exhibit of Hudson Valley designers in New York City at Whisper Editions. Catch Michael's showroom opening event on Saturday June 24th from 6-9 PM with locally made cider, beer and snacks.

Our friends at Workstead released a new collection at ICFF called The Lodge Collection. We partnered with Workstead in the early design stages of Hudson Woods to outfit the model house with lighting. The model house utilizes 2 of their pieces: the industrial chandelier at entry hall and bent wall lamp in the garage/studio. Workstead is based out of New York City, though they have roots in the Hudson Valley and have worked on several projects in the area. Workstead's new collection utilizes a series of structural wooden frames to support a variety of straightforward lighting functions: chandelier, pendant, sconce. The play between wood and metal emphasizes the counterpoint between structure and network.

This week, the Wall Street Journal wrote about Paul and Sheena Murphy, who were one of the early home buyers at Hudson Woods. Sheena is an interior designer whose work we have profiled in the past and her husband, Paul is a game designer and developer. With roots in Brooklyn they decided to make a more permanent second home in the Hudson Valley. You can read the article below and learn more about Paul and Sheena's story.

Architects have an interesting fascination with chairs. Many of the renowned 20th century architects are known as much for their chairs as they are their architecture, from Le Corbusier to Mies Van Der Rohe. Furniture design is much allows architects to craft on a smaller scale. The finished product in furniture design is much easier to test and much quicker to accomplish. Whereas buildings take years and maybe decades, a chair can be released relatively quickly.

The first black stained house at Hudson Woods was recently completed. Some photographs have been shared through our social media, and Wallpaper Magazine unveiled some of the new photography in February. Collected here are some of our favorite photos of the black cedar house. The black cedar creates a particularly striking contrast to the Mahogany window and door trim.

Growing up in his father’s wood shop and sculpture studio, Aaron was surrounded by art and architecture from birth. Aaron worked as an apprentice to builders as well as ceramicists throughout high school. In college, he studied both ceramics and architecture, graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture from the California College of the Arts in 2008. Aaron worked professionally as an architect in New York City, for three years before starting his own studio. Aaron’s work finds a balance between functionalism, simplicity and innovation. Aaron pushes material and maker boundaries to continually create and find new methods of using familiar materials in new and exciting ways.

Dzierlenga F+U is a woodworking and design studio in the Hudson Valley operated by our friend Casey Dzierlenga. You might recall our first story about Casey and how the Hudson Valley inspires her work. Since then, we have completed the model house and installed a couple of her designs as part of the furnishings. Casey has also released a number of new pieces, including items that have been licensed by our friends at West Elm and Kaufmann Mercantile.

Carl Hansen & Søn is a partner we carefully selected to help furnish the Hudson Woods model house. With years of heritage and tradition their, Carl Hansen is known for manufacturing several iconic items many designed by Hans Wagner, including the Wishbone dining chair, Elbow dining chair and Shell lounge chair. Laura Angelini is an interior designer and friend of ours who relocated full-time to the Hudson Valley 10 years ago. Her work is inspired by the natural beauty of the local landscape, “I really love working with the Hudson Valley’s many gifted artisans, and incorporating natural materials into each project,” Laura said. Laura's work over the last 25 years has included projects with leading NYC architects including Gensler & John Saladino.

Sheena Murphy is a Brooklyn based designer and Principal at design studio sheep + stone. We have the pleasure of knowing Sheena from her involvement in the Hudson Valley where she finds inspiration and incorporates work from a number of local maker and artisan partners. Sheena describes her style as modern, eclectic, layered, mostly neutral and often masculine with a focus on materials, process + environment.

When we last wrote about Materia Designs a little over a year ago, Hudson Woods was preparing to officially launch, and Materia had just shown their collection during New York Design week for the first time. Since then, Materia has moved to a new location just down the road from Hudson Woods in Accord, NY, as well as debuted a new collection of furniture and lighting focusing on elemental materials such as marble, parchment, porcelain, un-lacquered brass and leather.

The Hudson Woods pool house pavilion is a modernist structure positioned alongside the Hudson Woods pool. Designed for year round use, the pool house includes a sauna, bathroom/changing room, kitchenette, outdoor shower and expansive outdoor storage.

One of our first forays into fashion, it was a great opportunity to welcome fashion from local designers to Hudson Woods, including items by de Marchin in Hudson, Living Eden in Red Hook, Gwenno James in Beacon, and hats from Katie Burley, also in Beacon.

Tucked above a sprawling antiques store in “downtown” Rhinebeck is Hundred Mile, a compact set of rooms filled with some very big names in design. Owners Kristina Albaugh and Josh Ingmire view it as their personal showroom where they display furniture, lighting, and accessories from dozens of designers one would usually only find in major metropolitan areas.

We love Miss Moss's recent find, Saana ja Olli. Their textiles are striking and the imagery showcasing them below has just what we love: relaxation in nature. These patterns were made by a couple who own their own textile design company based out of Turku, Finland. Their products are sourced locally and manufactured. You can find their lovely products here.
