Rock and Rye Tavern

Outdoors get a spectacular view of the Shawangunk Ridge; indoors, dine in the 1759 stone tavern or the elegant 1830’s wing. Chef Kolakowski’s New American bistro-style menu sources from local farms, but truth be told, many just go for the cocktails with names like “Bitter-Sweet Symphony,” “Fitzcarraldo” and “Honey Badger.”

Amazingly there are two restaurants in Stone Ridge that serve fantastic sushi. Asia also features a long list (over 100!) of Chinese, Korean, Thai and Indian dishes on its menu? It was opened recently by a pair of Malaysian sisters who have another popular restaurant in Kingston under their belt.

The Depuy Canal House

This formerly infamous tavern has been restored and lovingly maintained for over 44 years by Chef John Novi. Novi is deeply connected to local growers and works that knowledge into his menu that some call “kitchen theater.” Be prepared to settle in for a while they can over-serve at times.

The Country Inn

Wait, are we in Williamsburg? This former biker bar has brief but considered menu, over 400 beers from around the world, a beautiful deck with a lake view and plenty of taxidermy. They have recently installed a pizza oven as well. Here come more hipsters… beat them before kitchen closes at 9.

Mountain Brauhaus

The German kitsch decore and the menu may not had changed much since the Ruoff family opened the Mountain Brauhaus in 1955, but that’s a good thing. Classic German cuisine and beers plus really good cocktails draw a bustling crowd, among them many weary rock climbers. Where else will your waitress be wearing a dirndl?

A Tavola Trattoria is the effort of two chefs from two of the best Italian restaurants in the city – Sfoglia and Al Di La. They combine classic Italian with local farm ingredients. We think it’s the best restaurant in New Paltz.

The Huguenot

The Huguenot isa collaboration between A Tavola Trattori, New Paltz and nearby Karl Family Farms. An organic, adventurous gastropub that would please any carnivore. There are plenty of vegetarian options but the farm sets the daily agenda with their meats. The cocktails are widely considered to be genius.

This retro-adorable eatery serves rather decadent comfort food, shakes, pies and most notably, a lavish country breakfast. A High Falls version of the popular locations in Manhattan. Mom will be jealous.

Who knew you could get pretty darn good sushi in Stone Ridge? Momiji has all the Japanese staples in the non-sushi zone, and remarkably fresh fish. Kids love the cool Ramune bubble sodas.

Market Street

A favorite for catering our Hudson Woods events, Market Street is the closest to resembling a “scene” in the area. The American-Italian fare by seasoned Hudson Valley chef Gianni Scappin is all about sharing small plates before a seasonably informed, elegantly executed entree. Oriole 9

The emphasis at Oriole 9 is on fresh, seasonal, simple and de rigueur local farm sourcing. Its “fresh from the garden” blackboard requires lots of chalk, making it a huge favorite in Woodstock. Co-owner Nina Moeys-Paturel’s parents served the likes of Dylan and Baez at their Woodstock espresso café.

Bread Alone, Boiceville

This Bread Alone location is perfect before or after a jaunt through the Ashokan Reservoir. It carries almost all of the organic grain products, and the kitchen cooks a mean brunch. Coming soon, they will host a farmer’s market Friday afternoons.

Mercato Osteria & Enoteca

This authentic Italian osteria serves very upscale food to the dining cognoscenti on both sides of the Hudson. Co-owner Francesco Buitoni is in fact a 7th generation member of the Buitoni pasta family and according to the Times, the restaurant “enables him to cook the way he grew up eating in Italy.”

The Red Onion

Housed in an old Colonial eyebrow on the road where Woodstock blends into Saugerties, the Red Onion serves “international bistro cuisine” and is well known for its generous portions, consistently inventive dishes and the proper cocktails at the busy bar. Unpretentious, but not inexpensive.

The Bear Café, Woodstock

On the banks of the Saw Kill (river) and adjacent the Bearsville theater, the Bear Café is as Woodstock as it gets. It opened in 1971 by then manager of Bob Dylan, the Band, Janis Joplin and many others. The crowd is there to “see-and-be-seen” and to enjoy the emphasis on organic ingredients on the “big city-class” menu.

The setting alone makes this excellent, contemporary Italian restaurant worth the visit. A rambling rustic farmhouse and companion barn (now a gorgeous catering space) are where chef Giovanni Scappin serves “straight forward” but consistently delicious pastas, and a “sensational” flatbread pizza.

Le Canard Enchainé

Boitson's

A clubby bistro whose center of attraction is it’s boisterous bar with the word, “Lubrication’”  written in large stained glass type above it. Boitson’s succinct but well considered menu combines French bistro, pub fare and Southern standards into what Hudson Valley Magazine calls, “American bistro comfort food.” Off menu there’s always a considerable list of more dressed up dishes.

Lekker

“Lekker” is Dutch for “delicious,” and indeed the spare but eclectic menu delivers on that promise at this Stone Ridge breakfast and lunch spot. There’s no particular cuisine, but more like a survey of many favorites from Moroccan lamb to Oaxaca tacos to an Italian breakfast. Created by the owners of Oriole9 in Woodstock NY, and Yum Yum Noodlebar in Woodstock & Kingston, Lekker is a local and weekender favorite where free wi-fi keeps a few folks lingering for a while and casually observing who’s wandering in and out.

The Village Tea Room

Housed in a 200 year old building that was the village tailor shop, the Tea Room is a seasonal farm to table restaurant and bakery that reflects the wandering imagination of a former Union Square Café chef.
